Brothas and Sistas United (BSU) is the junior high and high school after-school youth program of
Cornerstone
Community Outreach (CCO), a non-profit social services located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.
This program is designed to help relieve the life stresses of at-risk inner-city youth whose families are homeless, formerly homeless, or living on the edge of independent survival.
Uptown, Chicago’s most racially and economically mixed community, offers its youth tremendous opportunities, as well as tremendous risks. Uptown shares the same problems facing all urban communities: gangs, drugs, prostitution, homelessness, illiteracy, and racial conflict. Boys and girls growing up in this environment face tough challenges. To meet these challenges, Brothas & Sistas United is here to help.
What is our Mission?
- Get the kids off the street and offer them a positive influence to counter the negative influences they receive from their environment.
- To keep them in and doing well in school
- To offer quality relations with trustworthy adults.
- To encourage a positive healthy outlook of authority figures in their lives.
- To nurture their emotional needs
- To help them to enjoy life despite the environment they live in.
